STEWARDSHIP
“It’s great to see how our two sister organizations have worked together across generations to create a new model for sustainable land use.
I’m proud to be a part of that.”

Supporting sustainable forestry and protecting open land and the environment
The Timber Owners of New England (TONE) and the TONE Forest Recreation Association have collaboratively developed an innovative and sustainable forestry model, shaping the blueprint for responsible land use and recreational activities over the years. This progressive approach has been instrumental in safeguarding the integrity of the 3,200-acre TONE Forest. Through a thoughtfully devised ten-year management plan, periodic timber cuts are strategically implemented to harvest mature trees.
The revenue generated from these timber cuts not only cover TONE’s operating costs, but also the acquisition of new land and funding significant infrastructure projects. For instance, TONE funded the replacement of an aging dam at considerable expense so that one of the ponds could continue to be enjoyed by our members for fishing, skating, and boating.
Beyond financial support, timber cuts play a pivotal role in creating open habitats for wildlife and ensuring the overall health of the forest ecosystem. As TONE has expanded its land holdings and the TONE Forest has grown and matured over time, it has had a significant impact on the environment by capturing and storing atmospheric carbon dioxide. The products harvested from the land are essential in producing valuable renewable products and building materials.
Partnerships
TONE and the TONE Forest Recreation Associations are enthusiastic supporters of like-minded organizations and are always interested in exploring partnerships that benefit both organizations and their members.
Essex County Greenbelt Association is a great land conservation organization in Essex County, Massachusetts. ECGA members at the Steward level or higher get a discount off their TONE Forest Recreation Association initiation fees!
